The town of Le Mans is best known for the high octane 24 hour race, but the town offers more than just that. From its bustling modern center to the winding streets of the old town, there is so much to see and do in the town it is possibly Frances best kept secret. When visiting Le Mans hotels can be found in old, traditional buildings, perfect for the lovers of the authentic French experience. Equally hotel rooms can be booked in modern, high quality buildings in the new part of town which come complete with spa facilities, meeting rooms and conference suites.

Getting to Le Mans is easy from all corners of the globe. Whilst it does have its own airfield this is only a small regional airport which doesn't have any regular connections to major cities. However, the International Charles de Gaulle Airport in nearby Paris serves most major cities in the world and a transfer to Le Mans on a TGV train takes around 90 minutes and can be booked with the airfare on many airlines. There is also easy access to the town from other French tourist towns such as Nantes, Bordeaux and Bretagne. You can also travel by train from Lille which connects with the Eurostar for London.

Once in the town there are plenty of public buses to get you around. There is also a tram which runs from the University to the city center then out to the suburbs of the east. A branch of this tram runs to the 24 hour circuit and there is also a stop at the train station, making it easy to travel to attractions in the town and out to other towns.

In the heart of the old town, the Saint Julien Cathedral is a large and dominating building with unique architecture and well worth a closer look. The building of this cathedral began in 11th century and continued for over 500 years and to this day it remains an impressive spectacle and one of the largest cathedrals in France.

Behind the cathedral nestles the old town, a maze of cobbled streets flanked by miles of beautiful middle age buildings, many of which have lovely examples of 'colombage' where the timber frames of the buildings are left exposed on the external walls. Many of these houses date back to the 14th century and one of the most exquisite to view is the Maison du Pilier Rouge which is found along the Grand Rue and has distinctive red painted timbers and today houses the local tourist office.

Also in the old part of town the Museum of Reine Berenge houses maps and pictures of the old town as well as some local art and crafts. If you are interested in ancient history the city has recently discovered remains of a Roman thermal building which dates from the 3rd century. These can be visited but only by appointment, so speak to the tourist office about how to do this.

At the south end of the city is the circuit for the 24 hour race which is worth visiting even when there are no races on as there is the large Automobile Museum next to the circuit which is open all year round. If you are not interested in racing cars then its best to avoid the town around mid June as the town fills with thousands of international visitors anxious to catch the race. If you are able to get tickets, the race is quite a spectacle to see, especially if you can stay awake into the night and catch the sight of glowing carbon brakes and cars racing round the track in the darkness.

In Le Mans hotels are able to accommodate every type of traveler. Close to the train station are a number of excellent business hotels with plenty of facilities for the working traveler. Around the new town, larger chain hotels offer luxurious hotel facilities and guest services such as hotel gymnasiums and swimming pools for those looking for a luxury stay.

Away from the town center reasonably priced Le Mans hotels will be perfect for families with young children, as many offer rooms with three or even four beds, enabling families to stay together. Up in the old town are a number of guest houses and boutique hotels tucked away in the narrow streets. Whilst the hotel rooms in these establishments may be smaller, the trade off is the pleasure of staying in a charming medieval house as well as the proximity to many of the towns attractions and restaurants.
